Communicating with your sponsored child

Do you remember how you felt as a child when you received a letter or card in the post? Excited? Important? Special? Couldn’t wait to read and share it? Perhaps you kept it in a keepsake box to read over and over?

All children love to receive letters, cards and photos from their sponsors.  They feel respected like grown-ups and it builds self-esteem and confidence because they know someone is thinking of them. It improves their reading and develops their knowledge of the world.

We encourage all sponsors to write to their sponsored child.  It’s a great way to follow their progress, learn about each other’s lives and start to develop a lasting friendship.  With every letter exchanged, the greater the satisfaction and enjoyment for you both.

Life is busy.  We get that – so at the beginning of your sponsorship, you’ll receive a couple of postcards to send. You’ll also find some simple letters below (and in your writing kit) – just print one out and have a go.  Each year, we’ll also send you a birthday and Season’s Greeting card in plenty of time so you can add a personal message for your sponsored child.

And if you prefer to write your own letters, In return, you can expect a reply to your letters approximately sixteen weeks later.  You’ll also receive an annual child progress report with an update on Saint Ann Foundation program’s activities in their community. This provides you with information about your sponsored child’s development, living circumstances, educational progress and an updated photo.

Some of our sponsors visit their sponsored child to see for themselves how Saint Ann Foundation’s work is raising the community out of poverty.

Visiting your sponsored child will leave you both with treasured memories, a closer bond and will give you an insight into another culture.

Sending gifts to your sponsored child

We all know the importance of giving – how it makes people feel special, loved and important – and sponsored children are no exception! And, of course, it gives you, the giver, that happy feeling inside too.

If you would like to send a gift to your sponsored child (either of money or something tangible), please read our options below.  And remember, gifts don’t need to be lavish – in fact, we provide limits to ensure they don’t cause division within a community.

Sending small gifts with your letter

If you want to include a gift with your letter, we recommend small, flat and inexpensive items like stickers, postcards, bookmarks or stationery which fit easily in a standard envelope. These are also most likely to reach the child intact and without incurring costs for their families. Please don’t send parcels of any size as they are not accepted.

Sending gifts of money

There are two easy ways to send a gift:

  1. A personal gift for your sponsored child

It’s easy to arrange an annual gift of money to your sponsored child to celebrate their birthday, Christmas or other occasion.  We have an upper limit on gift amounts, and suggest $20 to $50 per gift, with a total upper limit of $100 per child and family each year.

To set up a gift, please call us on +256773025854 or email and we can arrange this for you.

  1. A gift for the community

If you wish to make a larger gift, we recommend a gift to the community, as this promotes cooperation and harmony. We consult with the community to ensure your money helps meet a specific need, such as play equipment or a water project or play area, or school.

It’s easy to organize a community gift. Simply call us on +256773025854 and we’ll talk you through your options in more detail.  We recommend sponsors donate gift money two months before they want their child or community to receive it as it will take approximately this much time for it to reach the community.

Letter of thanks

Your sponsored child and family or a community representative will send an acknowledgement or thank you letter within four months, and will let you know exactly how your gift was spent, and what it meant to them.
